UMW’s Crafters Gift God’s Love, Warmth &
Comfort with Their Cozy Quilts for Cancer Patients

On February 21st, 2012, one of our United Methodist Women’s Groups (the Mary Narin Circle) delivered 14 lap quilts to the POH/McLaren hospital for their cancer treatment center. Eight of the Crafters took off in the worst snowstorm we've had this year (the only one!) and cautiously drove to Pontiac.
For the past two months the crafters have cut, pieced, tied, backed and finished the 14 quilts. We were met by the head of the cancer treatment unit at POH/McLaren, who joyfully and gratefully accepted the quilts. She also informed us that these quilts are taken home at the end of the treatment so they need a continuous supply of them if we would like to make more. She also told us about a heart shaped pillow that is very useful when placed under the arm for support during treatment. We were very eager to make something else to help make the treatments more comfortable. So we left with a box of punch-skies (American spelled), many hugs and thank you’s and went on our way to join in a lunch and good Fellowship at Finos.
After learning how appreciative and useful our work has been, we want to continue to make more of the lap quilts AND the heart-shaped pillows AND little dresses for African children BUT we need more material. Lots of it. So now is the time to clean out your sewing closets and bring us your material that you do not have the time or desire to make anything out of and let us make more of these useful items. The material can be any subject matter and color but needs to be washable and preferably part cotton. We can also use backing material (large pieces) for the quilt backs. Fleece and flannel (softness) are good materials for this. - Linda

Another Crafter, Lisa, reflects:
What a Blessing that was for all of us involved. The word “Blessing”, feels and sounds like an understatement as I say it.
All of you who thought we were gathering merely for refreshments and chit-chat, I assure you, there has been much more than that going on in our church basement on Tuesday mornings. We all have been touched deeply by His Love, Grace & Joy with every step and stitch.
My life is so rich and filled with love from the fellowship I have with such a wise and loving group of Godly women. I would encourage women with Tuesday mornings free, to pencil us in and join us. You’ll be glad you did. - Lisa

The Crafters meet Tuesdays in the church basement from 9:30am to noon.
